20th century
Paper
Pictured here is a school using traditional teaching methods - a Quranic school or a kouttab. The students are seated in a circle on mats on the floor of a sparsely decorated room around their teacher, the moueddeb. In the 19th century and early 20th centuries, the Quranic schools were a fundamental part of traditional education, where students would learn the Quran, Islamic thought and the basic rules of the Arabic language.
