Description:

Pictured here is Dr. Charles Nicolle, a French microbiology doctor born in Rouen on 21 September 1966, in his research laboratory. His name is strongly linked to l'Institut Pasteur, which he directed from 1903–1936, playing the role of administrator, researcher, school headmaster, and advocate for the teaching of hygiene and illness prevention. In 1928 he received the Nobel Prize for Physiology. He died in 1936 and is buried at the Institut Pasteur, where his tombstone is engraved with olive and apple tree branches crossed over, the symbols of Tunisia and Normandy.
