Zaytuna University

19th century
Paper
This photograph shows young students coming out of a class in the Zaytuna University. In fact, the mosque was not only a place of worship, but also a sizeable university. A number of theologians, litterateurs, and art and science scholars from all over the Arab world (with an emphasis on North Africa) founded, across various generations, the Zaytuna university in Tunis. The teaching was constantly being modernized and restructured during the 19th century, and particularly under the reign of Ahmed Pacha Bey and the viziership of the reforming minister Khaireddine (Khayr al-Din).
