'Ali (pictured here) and Mohamed were two of the leaders of the protest movement "Harakat al-Shabab al-Tunisi" (the Young Tunisians). Born in Tunis in 1876 and 1881 respectively, these two men of Turkish origin helped found a French-language newspaper, Le Tunisien, through which they attacked the politics of the French colonialists and demanded reform. With the help of their comrades, the brothers organised many acts of resistance, such as the Jellaz Affair (1911) and the tramway boycott (1912). The arrest of the majority of the movement's founders, and the suppression of the newspaper Le Tunisien marked the end of their activities in Tunisia. However, they continued to make their demands from abroad, working mainly in Geneva and Istanbul, where they finally died in 1818 ('Ali) and 1820 (Mohamed).
