Pictured here is Marius (Mario) Scalesi, a young poet of Italian origin, born on 6 February 1892 in Tunis to an Italian father and a Maltese mother. He suffered from tuberculosis from birth, and became paralysed following a fall down the stairs in his home in La Goulette, the so-called "Little Sicily" of Tunis. Forced to abandon his studies in order to make a living, he completed his education independently. His articles of literary criticism and poems were published in the journal La Tunisie Illustrée. His collection of poems, Les Poèmes d'un Maudit sheds light on the hardships of his life. He died in 1922 in an asylum in Palermo. A fascinating figure due to his triple cultural identity - Italian, French and Tunisian - he is considered one of the pioneers of North African poetry in French.
