In order to evoke and convey the spirit of the Balkans and the Orient as faithfully as possible, Paja Jovanović meticulously recorded each detail of the interior of a typical Balkan or Eastern house. He also collected props that made up a family’s inventory of furniture (e.g. the hexagonal decorative table to the left), and carefully studied the physiognomies and characters of the men and women he encountered in the southern Balkans, in Egypt, Constantinople, the Caucasus and elsewhere. The precision of draughtsmanship and freshness of colour in this painting by Paja Jovanović ranks it among his more successful works from the mid-1880s.
