Description:

Bright, folkloristically vivid, technically impeccable and with an abundance of ethnographic detail, this is one of Jovanović’s best paintings, both in this period and as a whole. In a broader sense, this work by Paja Jovanović contains all the relevant characteristics of the poetics of academicism and thus, together with Jovanović’s other works from this period, had a crucial impact on the development of realism in Serbian painting in the late 19th century.
