25 May 1827
Pedagogue, engineer and mathematician Petrache Poenaru was the first Romanian inventor to obtain a patent. After 1821 he studied in Germany and then in France. While in Paris, he invented the fountain pen with a replaceable ink cartridge, a pen devised to ensure a constant flow of ink, preventing ink leaks, and to allow the replacement of some of the component parts. On 27 May 1827 the Manufactures Bureau within the French Ministry of Internal Affairs granted him for this invention a patent with a validity of five years. Although his invention did not become known at the time and was not commercially exploited, Poenaru is considered to be the first inventor to receive a patent for a fountain pen.
