About National Museum of Romanian History, Bucharest
1876
After Moldavia and Wallachia became vassals of the Ottoman Empire, their rulers lost the right to struck coins. Therefore, commercial exchanges were done using foreign coins, the most widely circulated being Ottoman coinage. Things changed in the second half of the 19th century when national coins were issued in the United Principalities starting with 1867.
