Daffah khachyya
Doha, Qatar
National Museum of Qatar
1940–1950
Black wool
This was purchased from Sheikh Sa`ud’s family collection in 2001. The cloak is handmade and hand embroidered, made from heavy black wool. It is estimated to be older than 1960, between the 1940’s and the 1950’s. It is speculated that it was used by the Bedouins from eastern Saudi Arabia. It is called daffah khachyya and not bisht. Khachyya is the man who would have been involved in making the cloaks.
