Shaykh Nasif al-Yaziji was born in March 1800 in Kfarshima (Ba'abda). He wrote his first poems age ten, and after mastering the sciences became the assistant to Emir Bashir Shihab II for 12 years. In 1840 he moved to Beirut and dedicated himself to writing. He also became a professor at al-Bustani's National School and later at the Syrian Protestant College (now the American University of Beirut). He stayed here until 1869, when he fell ill and retired. He died in February 1871, forty days after the death of his oldest son. He is most famous for his work Majma' al-Bahrayn.
