Butrus al-Bustani was born in Debbeye, and studied at Ayn Warka School for ten years. He was appointed professor at this school at the age of 20, before moving to teach in the American College of 'Abeyh. He then moved to Beirut, where he became an interpreter at the US consulate, working with American missionaries and their printing press. He published numerous important books, including his famous Encyclopedia, and founded the National School of Beirut. He died in May 1883.
