Giuseppe Parvis, who emigrated from Italy to Egypt, began extensive production of elegant furniture adapted to Arabian taste and decorated with mother-of-pearl and metal inserts. He won awards for his work at the Universal Exhibitions of Paris in 1867, Vienna and Philadelphia. Giuseppe Parvis is an example of successful businessman who successfully adapted to the Egyptian market. He was able to run laboratories with 50 workers and trained a large number of students in ebony furniture making. Over the span of 20 years he introduced and sold furniture to Arabian people who traditionally did not possess such furniture, using an Arabic style and taste and by using woods found in the East, Egypt and China.
