Description:

This photograph was taken by an unknown author during the excavations led by Ernesto Schiaparelli in Egypt. Schiaparelli (1856-1928) was Director of the Egyptian Museum of Florence from 1881 to 1894 and in 1894 became Director of the Egyptian Museum of Turin. The photograph shows a section of a trail in the south of Deir el-Bahri. It is easy to recognize the ruins of a residential district, which presumably hosted the workers and the artisans involved in the works for the tombs of the Valley of the Queens. Ernesto Schiaparelli, first as museum director and then as excavation superintendent from 1907 to his death, led several excavation campaigns around 1903-1914 in the Valley of the Queens, a place dedicated to the burial of wives, princes and princesses since the reign of Rameses I.
