1852
In 1762, Muslims living in Livorno were granted a plot of land outside the city walls, near the beach, to build a graveyard (highlighted in green in the map). The graveyard remained in use until the second half of the 19th century. A Muslim graveyard existed in Livorno even before the 18th century. A significant Muslim community lived in the town. Its first members were captives taken to Italy as slaves. Muslim traders settled in town as well. In 1856, the graveyard was enlarged and surrounded by walls. In 1872 it was demolished to build a road and some of the graves were moved to the city graveyard.
