The names appearing in this list are mostly Jewish, including that of Giacomo Castelnuovo (Livorno, Italy, 1819 – La Goulette, Tunisia, 1886), a medical doctor who had to flee Italy because of his liberal ideas and his support for Italy’s national unification. Initially he went to Egypt, where he founded two Italian newspapers, Lo Spettatore Egiziano and Il Progresso d’Egitto.
The author of many medical publications, in Tunis Castelnuovo became the Bey’s personal physician. He served as president of the Tunisian branch of the Alliance Israélite Universelle, and promoted the construction of a synagogue, on a plot of land granted by the Bey.
A Freemason, he fought in Italy in the wars for Italy’s unification. He was awarded honours by both the Italian King (who ennobled him) and by the Bey of Tunis.
