The thirteenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series, Germinal (1885), is the most well-known and the most discussed of Zola's works. This naturalist writer took a new approach to depicting workers' lives, shedding light on miners' terrible working conditions and the violence and difficulty of strikes. Fearing that the adaptation of this novel for stage would trigger social unrest, the play was initially banned. It was finally performed for the first time in 1888 at the Théâtre du Châtelet. This poster highlights the most important themes of the novel - life in the mine, strikes, etc.
