Florence Nightingale (1820–1910), a British nurse famous for her commitment to and improvement of the health service, was sent to on a humanitarian mission to Scutari in the middle of the Crimean war. With a team of about 30 nurses, she cleaned the hospital and reorganised the wards in order to prevent the outbreak of epidemics. In this image she is pictured in the sick ward, taking various measures to improve its hygiene.
