Description:

French colonisation of Algeria deprived the Algerian schooling system of its traditional funding and brought it into disorder, as very few "indigenous Muslim" students were accepted into the new European schools. A few private initiatives emerged, such as this establishment for young Muslim women, founded by Madame Luce Allix in 1846.
