Description:

The collection One Thousand and One Nights was translated into French in the early 18th century. The rise of Orientalism caused it to become extremely popular, appearing as the subject of numerous editions, adaptations, etc. In the 19th century, a tale from the collection was staged in one of Paris' most famous theatres (the Théâtre du Châtelet), and, as this image shows, the theatre was redecorated as an "Oriental palace" for the occasion.
