In August 1802, irritated by the repeated pillaging of his ships by Algerian pirates, Napoléon I sent General Hullin and Consul Dubois-Thainville to the then Dey of Algeria, Mustafa Pasha, with a threatening message. This print is an example of Napoleonic propaganda, as it attempts to highlight the "insolence" of the bey, who stays seated on the sofa, and the "bravery" of the general who, with a sword on his side, makes his speech.
