The 19th century saw mass rural to urban migration, particularly to Paris, for largely economic reasons. These migrants often settled with people from their region, who offered them work in specific fields. Thus, those from the Savoy region became specialised in chimney-sweeping, those from the Auvergne were water-carriers or coal-merchants, those from Brittany were domestic workers, and so on. Regional solidarity therefore ensured the survival of regional culture. In this image, for example, a quartet from the Auvergne are advertising their performance in a café-concert in traditional dress. Music from the Auvergne was the origin of the Parisian bal-musette (a dance accompanied by accordion music).
