In 1885, the French diplomat Auguste Pavie brought thirteen young Khmers to Paris so that they could see France. This "Cambodian mission" was soon transformed into a colonial school which accepted young students of French, Cambodian or African origins in order to train the future civil servants of the colonies. Over first two, then three, years the students studied a variety of languages, French law, and ethnology. in 1895 the architect Maurice Yvon, son of an Orientalist painter, was appointed as the architect for a specialist school on 2 Rue de l'Observatoire. Insipired by "neo-Moorish" architecture, the resulting structure became a key example of "colonial art".
