Description:

Many different two-wheeled cycles, such as dandy horses and velocipedes, were invented in the early 19th century. Their underlying principle was the parallel use of feet and wheels to propel the vehicle forward. They quickly become very fashionable amongst the European upper classes, who saw them as a source of entertainment, as we can see from this English print. However, it was not until the 20th century, after many alterations (pedals, etc.) that the "bicycle" became a widespread mode of transport.
