The purpose of the album Les Colonies Françaises was to highlight, amongst other things, the French "achievements" and technological innovations in the colonies, and thus legitimise their rule. This image shows the construction of an artesian well in Tunisia in the 19th century. In reality, however, this type of well was built by the French army in order to appease the populations in agricultural areas and thus better control them.
