The construction of bridges had always been a complicated matter, and particularly so in Bordeaux, where the river was especially temperamental. Until the 19th century people crossed it by ferry. However, in 1810 Napoléon I ordered a bridge to be built in Bordeaux, which was completed in 1822. The expertise this required (particularly the building of tunnels to reduce the size of the structure) attracted the attention of many contemporary engineers and architects.
