Commissioned by Isma'il Pasha for the inauguration of the Suez Canal, Verdi's opera Aida was performed for the first time in Cairo in 1871, with great success. It recreated life at the time of the pharaohs, with the details and the plot developed by the archaeologist Mariette. Aida was performed in Paris from 1876, with a grand and successful performance at the Opéra Garnier in 1880.
