Description:

The tale of Aladdin and his lamp was very popular in the theatre and the opera following the rise of Orientalism in the 1820s. Its first performance as an opera in 1822 was so successful that gas was used for the first time ever at the Opéra de Paris, to light up the lamp on stage.
