Loie Fuller: the serpentine dance

About National Library of France,
19th century
France
Mary Louise Fuller was an American dancer who lived in Europe for many years. As an artist, she was inspired by her travels and by new inventions - the dance of the veils (the "serpentine" dance) mixes Arab influences with light tricks using electricity. Loie Fuller was an important influence in the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements, and helped train other great artists such as Isadora Duncan. The "serpentine dance" was imitated by many artists, and inspired the first cinematographers, such as the Lumière brothers, who dedicated a short film to it.
