Charles Gounod turned to the librettists Jules Barbier and Michel Carré for advice when he was writing his great opera, and so they recommended him the legend of Hiram, the great tale narrated by Gérard de Nervale in his Voyage en Orient. The opera was put on in Paris in 1862. As this costume from the court of Suleiman shows, the models and costumes responded above all to the Orientalist stereotypes in vogue at the time.
