Pascal Sébah (1823–1886) was a French photographer working in the Ottoman capital Constantinople, where he developed a successful trade selling photographs to European tourists and lovers of Orientalism. The great changes Constantinople underwent towards the end of the 19th century are evident in this image. The Valide Sutlan Mosque dominates the Eminönü port, which had become very prosperous during the Ottoman era thanks to active trading with the West. The construction of the Galata bridge, the Orient Express railway line, and the arrival of steam-boats also contributed to its development.
