Founded in 1856, the Société Historique Algérienne organised excavations, published a journal, and created maps and plans. This map helped facilitate research on the Roman occupation of Algeria, by indicating clearly the main sites, how to get there, and other elements which allow the reader to better understand the Roman presence (such as marble quarries and thermal baths).
