Description:

The architect François Mazois (1783–1826) was appointed as Caroline Murat's official artist in 1809. He was allowed to set up in Pompeii to draw and measure the ruins, something unheard of at this time. His drawings and observations, published under the title Les Ruines de Pompéi, Dessinées et Mesurées pendant les Années 1809 à 1811, became a model for contemporary archaeologists and a source of inspiration for neo-Classical architecture.
