Visitors to the 1867 Exposition Universelle (world fair) had the opportunity to explore a reconstruction of the Temple of Edfu in a "Parc Égyptien". This reconstruction (containing a mix of various different temples) was a response both to the fashion for ancient Egypt, and the desire for good diplomatic relations with modern Egypt. Indeed, we can see the imperial couple in this photograph standing with Isma'il Pasha, the viceroy of Egypt, who had come to see the exhibition. The Temple of Edfu had just been rediscovered by the famous Egyptologist Mariette.
