For the Exposition Universelle (world fair) of 1889, France wanted to both celebrate the centenary of the 1789 revolution and also showcase its skill and inventiveness. The Eiffel Tower, a daring move in the world of cast-iron architecture, became first the symbol of the exhibition then of the city as a whole.
