Eugène Atget (1857–1927) began developing an interest in photography in 1888. He created his photos in series, and sold them to institutions. It was thus, that around 1898, he came to photograph the old neighbourhoods of Paris destined to demolition, and sold these photographs to the new Commission du Vieux Paris. As he photographed roads dug up by the urban excavations, he also captured onlookers fascinated by this new mode of transport. The Bastille station is pictured here, one of the overground sections of the ligne 1, which explains how these people were able to comfortably observe. The Colonne de Juillet of the Place de Bastille is visible in the background.
