Description:

When Napoléon III wanted a new opera house to be built (l’Opéra Garnier), he asked Haussmann to excavate the road beneath it, allowing him to go to the opera safely and without risk of being attacked from his residence at the Château des Tuileries. Haussman was forced to dig through an old neighbourhood, built on a hill. This photograph indicates the vastness of the works. The architect Garnier ordered Haussman to ensure no trees blocked the view of the opera house.
