This engraving is an example of an illustration travel book in the 19th century. These books offered readers a view of exotic and distant lands through richly detailed illustrations. Thomas Allom (1804–1873), the painter of this engraving, was a topographical illustrator who travelled to East Mediterranean, North Africa and China. Allom was also architect, hence the description of the architectural details in “The interior of a Moorish palace in Alger”.
