Khedive Ismail, the fifth ruler of the Muhammad 'Ali Dynasty, Khedive of Egypt from 1863 to 1879. Ismail assumed rule over Egypt when work on the Suez Canal was ongoing. He continued the project until the Canal was opened for navigation in 1869. He established Dar al-Kutub (the National Library and Archives of Egypt) on 26 September 1870. The First Egyptian Parliament was inaugurated in 1866, during his reign.
