These two original lithographs depict the city of al-Jaza'ir (Algiers) prior to the English bombardment led by Lord Exmouth on 26 August 1816. The regency was ruled first by the Beylerbeys (general governors) from 1518 to 1587, then by the Pashas from 1587 to 1659, the Aghas from 1659 to 1671 and the Deys from 1671 to 1830. The reign of the final Dey of Algiers, Hussein, lasted 12 years until the French conquest in 1830.
