Portrait of Abdul-Mejid I, Sultan of Turkey (1823–1861). When he came to power in 1839, he tried to re-occupy lands lost to Muhammad 'Ali, the ruler of Egypt. In this effort he was supported by Britain and Austria. In 1840 a combined British-Austrian fleet cut off the supply lines of the Egyptian army and forced the Egyptians to sign the 1840 Convention of Alexandria. Abdul-Mejid was able to win back Syria and Palestine. In 1849 he granted the Hungarian refugees exile. In 1861 he died and left his throne to his brother Abdülaziz.
