Silver
This silver box was made in memory of the Sinai Desert campaign embarked upon by soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian Army. At the end of 1915, two Austro-Hungarian artillery units were transported to reach the front at Gallipoli after a demand for support from the Ottoman Empire. In 1916, the 15cm howitzer battery was transferred to Smyrna and the mobile 24cm mortar battery was stationed near Haifa in Palestine to defend Mount Carmel. Other parts of the unit took part in the battle of Gaza and remained in the area till 1918. The last members of these Austro-Hungarian units were finally repatriated to Trieste in 1919.
