Napoleon ended the existence of the 1000-year-old Venetian Republic in May 1797. French troops proceeded to occupy Venice for six months from May 1797 to January 1798, then ceded the city to Austria. Austrian troops occupied Venice starting 18 January 1798 until the Peace of Pressburg in 1805.
