Description:

The climax of the Greater Panathenaia, the chief festival of Athens, held in honour of Athena, was a procession which ended with the presentation of the newly woven peplos (a woman’s garment) to the tutelary goddess of the city. This is the subject of the frieze around the cella of the Parthenon, the temple on the Athenian Acropolis. This fragment shows two bearded elder citizens of Athens in conversation.
