During his reign, the Emperor Hadrian (figure right) adopted Antoninus Pius (centre left), who in turn adopted the 17-year-old Marcus Aurelius (left) and the eight-year-old Lucius Verus. A head stares from behind Hadrian’s left shoulder, presumably representing the guardian spirit of Aelius Verus, late father of Lucius. A bull is being offered to the gods as a sacrifice.
