Traditional house
Ashrafiyye, Lebanon
19th century
The houses were built with wooden windows which were filled with tinted glass. A balcony could usually be found on the first floor, which was covered with a clear window for lighting and ventilation purposes. This architectural style was clearly influenced by European architecture and design, indicating the growing influence of European culture and trends in 19th century Beirut and elsewhere in the region.
Houses in the 19th century were modestly built; the roof was generally supported by wooden beams, and stone stairs were built inside the house to access the upper floors (although many other houses only had wooden stairs).
