Date of Monument:

1878

History:

When the rebuilding of the “Moorish Kiosk” in the Linderhof park undertaken by order of Ludwig II was completed at the beginning of 1878, it evidently reawakened the king’s interest in buildings in the Islamic architectural style.

The pavilion, acquired at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1878, was remodelled inside at Ludwig II's request and originally built on the Stockalpe near the Austrian border. The "Moroccan House" had already also been shown at the International Exhibition in Vienna in 1873 and had been built for this purpose in Morocco. The wooden building, acquired by a private individual after the king's death, was bought back by the state in 1980 and was reconstructed in the palace park in 1998.

Description:

The king had considerable alterations made to both the outside and the inside of the house in keeping with his own lavish tastes. Jean Perron, a sculptor in Paris who had organised the purchase for Ludwig II, also acquired the rich furnishings appropriate for an ornamental setting such as tables, chandeliers, tabourets, mirrors and vessels, none of which have been preserved. Numerous skilled workers and artists were involved in the dismantling, rebuilding and altering of the house. The entire colour scheme was changed with an abundant use of gold, and individual rooms were furnished with costly materials. Coloured glazing “in the Moorish style” and a tessellated floor were introduced to add to the oriental character of the house.
